What Is Potassium Silicate?

Potassium silicate is an alkaline, water-soluble inorganic polymer synthesized by fusing high-purity silica sand with potassium carbonate at temperatures exceeding 1100°C. Unlike sodium-based alternatives, it exhibits zero efflorescence (no white salt bloom) when drying.

When applied in concrete densification or inorganic zinc-rich coatings, the silicate reacts with free calcium hydroxide to form an insoluble calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel matrix, permanently sealing pores while remaining vapor-permeable.

Available Product Forms

We manufacture three distinct physical forms to accommodate different mixing equipment, transport constraints, and end-use applications.

Liquid Potassium Silicate Drums

Liquid Solution

35-40% solid content with viscosity ranging from 100-400 cps. Filtered through 5-micron meshes to ensure a transparent, sediment-free liquid. Ideal for direct injection into liquid fertilizer blending tanks or architectural coating mixers without pre-dissolution.

  • Ready for immediate mixing
  • Eliminates dust hazards

Instant Soluble Powder

Instant Powder

Spray-dried amorphous powder with 99% passing through a 100-mesh sieve. Moisture content strictly controlled under 2%. Drastically reduces ocean freight costs by eliminating water weight. Essential for dry-mix refractory mortars and powdered fertilizers.

  • Cuts shipping volume by 60%
  • Rapid cold-water dissolution
Potassium Silicate Glass Lumps

Glass Lumps (Cullet)

Solid, glass-like transparent or semi-transparent lumps. Serves as the primary raw material for regional silicate dissolvers equipped with high-pressure autoclaves (operating at 150°C+). The most cost-effective form for massive bulk procurement.

  • Lowest cost per MT of solid
  • Indefinite shelf life in dry storage

Industrial Applications

Engineered for specific chemical interactions across agriculture, construction, and heavy industry.

Potassium Silicate Fertilizer

Silicon Fertilizer Base

Provides highly bioavailable orthosilicic acid and potassium. Strengthens crop cell walls to prevent lodging in rice and wheat, and increases resistance to fungal infections like powdery mildew.
Inorganic Coatings

Inorganic Mineral Coatings

Acts as a permanent binder that chemically fuses with masonry substrates (silicification). Creates a breathable, micro-porous paint film that prevents blistering, peeling, and efflorescence.
Concrete Hardener

Concrete Densifiers

Penetrates concrete pores to react with calcium hydroxide, forming dense C-S-H crystals. Increases surface abrasion resistance by up to 40% while preventing concrete dusting in industrial warehouses.
Welding Electrodes

Welding Electrode Flux

Used as a high-temperature binder in the extrusion of flux coatings onto welding rods. Potassium arc-stabilizing properties ensure a smooth, low-spatter AC welding arc compared to sodium binders.
Fire Resistant Paint

Fire Resistant Materials

Exhibits excellent intumescent properties. When exposed to extreme heat, it expands to form a rigid, insulating silica foam barrier, protecting structural steel from reaching critical failure temperatures.
Corrosion Protection

Zinc-Rich Anti-Corrosion

Serves as the inorganic vehicle for zinc dust in heavy-duty marine and pipeline primers. Provides galvanic protection to steel substrates with superior UV and chemical resistance compared to epoxies.

Potassium vs. Sodium Silicate

While sodium silicate is cheaper, potassium silicate offers distinct chemical advantages that are mandatory for specific high-end applications.

Property Requirement Potassium Silicate Sodium Silicate
Efflorescence (Salt Bloom) Zero (Forms K₂CO₃ which is highly soluble) High (Forms white, insoluble Na₂CO₃ crusts)
Agricultural Value Excellent (Provides essential K nutrient) Harmful (Adds toxic Na+ ions to soil)
Refractory Binding Temp Higher melting point Lower melting point
Solubility Rate Faster dissolution in cold water Slower, requires heat

Technical FAQs

Common questions from procurement engineers and formulation chemists.

How do I choose the correct potassium silicate modulus for my application?
Modulus (the molar ratio of SiO₂ to K₂O) dictates the chemical behavior. A high modulus (3.0-4.0) contains more silica, making it ideal for fast-setting binders in coatings and concrete densifiers. A low modulus (2.0-2.5) is more alkaline and highly soluble, making it the standard choice for liquid silicon fertilizers to ensure nutrient availability.
Is potassium silicate compatible with other fertilizer nutrients?
Due to its high alkalinity (pH > 11), direct mixing with acidic fertilizers or calcium/magnesium salts in concentrated forms will cause rapid precipitation (silica gel formation). It should be applied separately or formulated with specific chelating agents in multi-nutrient liquid feeds.
What is the shelf life of the liquid vs. powder forms?
Liquid potassium silicate has a standard shelf life of 12-24 months if kept in tightly sealed drums above freezing temperatures (to prevent crystallization). The instant powder and glass lumps have an indefinite shelf life, provided they are stored in completely dry, moisture-free conditions, as they are highly hygroscopic.
How is your potassium silicate price determined for bulk orders?
Pricing fluctuates based on the current raw material cost of potassium carbonate and silica sand. Your final FOB/CIF price will depend on the product form (liquid is cheaper per MT than powder due to water content), requested modulus, packaging type (IBC vs. drums), and total order volume (MOQ is typically 1x20ft FCL).
